Headaches, tension and migraine, are a problem for many people. Most of us tend to reach for a bottle of pills when a headache starts, but there are alternatives that are more natural and have been used since the days of the cavemen.
Listed below are five natural methods of relieving the pain of a headache without resorting to chemicals that can have harmful side effects.
1.Herbal teas have long been used to treat or cure many different ailments of the human body. Combining the herbs chamomile and fever few in the right proportion will create a beneficial tea that has been used to relieve the pain of headaches for centuries. An additional benefit is the relaxation that comes from sitting and drinking a cup of hot tea.
2.Massage has been used to relax tight muscles that cause tension headaches. The muscles of the neck and shoulders tighten and spasm until they cause pain in the neck and head. The person suffering from the headache can massage himself/herself by rubbing the neck at the base of the skull to get some relief from the tension in the muscles that is causing the headache pain. The best results, including complete relief from the headache, can be achieved by having someone who is experienced in the art of massage work the tension out these muscles gently and surely.
3.A common problem suffered by most Americans is dehydration to one degree or another. Many people drink coffee, tea, or soft drinks at regular intervals, but avoid drinking pure water. These other beverages have their uses, but they also add to the problem of dehydration because they have a diuretic effect on the body.
Many people do not realize that a headache is a symptom of being dehydrated. It is possible that some immediate relief from headache pain can be achieved simply by drinking a glass of water.
4.Taking dietary supplements that contain certain herbs can help to prevent or treat some types of headaches. Feverfew and Gingko Biloba have been shown to be effective at fighting off headaches. There are other herbs that help as well.
One important note, check with a medical doctor before beginning any regimen of taking herbal supplements to be sure there is no chance of drug interactions with other medications one may be taking.
5.The ancient Chinese art of acupuncture has been proven to be effective at treating the pain of migraine. One thing that many people do not realize is that applying pressure to many of the locations normally stuck with a needle during acupuncture can have similar benefits without the need for the needles. This Acupressure can help a great deal in relieving headache pain.
Simply by squeezing the skin between the thumb and forefinger on the hand or pressing and making small circular motions right in front of the ears can provide fast, natural relief.
All of these forms of pain relief are completely natural and involve no chemicals. Modern medications have come a long way in treating pain, but the natural remedies still work and, for many people, they are preferred.
